#LifesShort: Supporting Children’s Hospice Week

Did you know, there are 49,000 children in the UK alone living with a life-limiting illness?

From 21st to 27th May 2018 is Children’s Hospice Week. An important week in the caring calendar, and a week to help raise awareness and funds to help support the children in the UK living with life-limiting and terminal illness.

At After Umbrage, we are lucky to support plenty of amazing carers and their families across the country. From Rachel, Roy and their amazing son Alec (read their story here), to the inspirational Keith, Nicola and Toni (read their story here), we love providing these incredible families with a little timeout and TLC at Kingham Cottage.

Without weeks like Children’s Hospice Week, families like Rachel, Roy and Alec, and Keith, Nicola and Toni wouldn’t receive the support they need to be the positive, wonderful families they are. As part of Children’s Hospice Week, Together For Short Lives are encouraging us to share our ‘moments that matter’ using the hashtag #LifesShort.

So what is our ‘moment that matters’?

There are hundreds to choose from, but this is one we will never forget: seeing photos of little Harley opening his Christmas presents at Kingham Cottage surrounded by his family, surrounded by love. And receiving this message from his Father, Wayne:

“Being told your 5 year old boy is terminally ill is one of the hardest blows in life anyone can take. But memories like this are priceless. Thank you so much for the chance to get away and spend special time with our little boy.” Wayne Bond

That’s our #LifesShort moment. What’s yours?

Kingham Cottage is the perfect place for a family getaway. Whether that’s some time out for siblings and parents, or for the whole family. Whether you’re carers, or not! Private bookings can be made via the Kingham Cottage website, and 100% of the booking fee is donated to After Umbrage, allowing us to continue offering carers free breaks.

If you’re caring for someone with a life-limiting illness, you may be eligible for a free stay at Kingham Cottage. After Umbrage is proud to offer free breaks to anyone caring for someone with a life-limiting condition, as well as carers who have sadly been bereaved in the last 12 months.

The application process is simple:

  1. Download our referral form and take it to either your local Hospice or GP. Once signed send it back to us at PO BOX 1310, OUNDLE, PETERBOROUGH, PE2 2PE.
  2. We will then contact you with your booking code and instructions. You’ll then be able to see when the cottage is available, and choose your time.
  3. Once booked a FULLY REFUNDABLE £50.00 deposit is required. We love our After Umbrage cottage and know you will too, but accidents happen and we want to keep it beautiful for everyone.

We hope to be welcoming you to Kingham Cottage soon!
